The Fall season is here and we’re looking forward to the holidays. This is the time of year that can make or break us if we don’t stay ahead of the curve (pun intended). All that hard work we put in over the past ten months can come to a crashing end if we don’t put our fitness plan into overdrive. This is not to say that we can’t enjoy the holidays, we just need to have a game plan.
There are a few steps involved:
1) Meal prep is by far the most important component. It doesn’t matter how much time you put into your workouts or how hard you train, if you consume calories with the mindset that “I worked hard so I can eat whatever I want,” then you sabotage everything. The key is to plan ahead. Prepare your meals in advance. Always keep something handy in case of an emergency. Keep a shaker cup with protein powder, a bar or a pack of trail mix in your purse, your car or even at your desk in case you get stuck.
2) Plan your workout time. Set a schedule at the beginning of the week as to when you can get to the gym. Go with a friend. This makes it easier when you have someone hold you accountable and vice versa. Go during your lunch break. If you can’t make it to the gym, block out some time to get it in at home before going to work or after work. If you only have 30 minutes that day that is still enough time to get in a quick one. You can make those 30 minutes as intense as possible, (ex. a 5 minute HIIT warmup, body weight exercises such as squats, lunges, pushups and plank rows). That should get the job done.
3) Drink plenty of water. Try to drink 2 liters or a half gallon of water a day. This will help you stay hydrated, keep your metabolism working efficiently and help prevent overeating. The earlier in the day the better, that way you’re not in the bathroom all night.
4) Plan ahead. If you know you’re going out to dinner or to a holiday party, plan accordingly. Don’t skip meals. Eat the same number of meals you eat everyday that way you won’t be hungry and overeat when you go out. You can indulge a bit but keep in mind, everything in moderation.
Enjoy the Holidays!
