Meditation: A Workout for the Mind
As I stated before, there’s so much going on in the world today and it can be difficult at times to find that peace within. This is so important to maintain balance in our lives. Meditating is one way to achieve that balance. I’ll admit I’m certainly no expert when it comes to meditating. As with anything else it takes practice, discipline and patience. Meditation is truly a workout for the mind. It’s a cleansing of the mind, body and soul, a way to find inner peace which can then translate to our daily lives in the hopes of it becoming less stressful. It’s letting go of the toxins that can permeate our inner being.
Meditation is alignment with breath. It’s how we can be nurtured by our breath and our aware presence. It brings about a sense of calm as we deepen our practice. It seems simple enough but as I have found, the more clutter you have in your brain, the more one should work on relieving or letting go of it. The more you practice or train the mind, the better you become.
As with exercise, one should start out slowly, pace yourself. Start with 5 minutes if that’s all you have time for. It’s best to find a quiet place where you can focus on your breathing as the breath is an important part of meditation. Sometimes I’ll meditate in my car if I don’t get to do it at home or take a meditation class.
In the beginning, it can be a bit daunting or discouraging and even overwhelming. Your mind might want to wander a bit but it’s important not to give up. Try a little bit every day. You can even try it more than once a day. You will become more comfortable with the stillness and peace around you and become less distracted.
When you truly focus on your breathing and learn to relax your mind it can become a bit emotional, you might feel lighter, or a change in your posture. This is when you know that the practice of meditation is working.
I spoke to several people who gave me some insight as to their experience with meditation and it really encouraged me to keep trying and not give up. Be patient I was told. There was such excitement during the various conversations when speaking about what meditation has done for them and how it has changed them. I’ll be honest, although I’m new to this type of workout, I like what I have experienced so far. I have meditated in 5 to 15-minute increments and have felt lighter, taller and more clarity. A friend told me there are several meditation apps to help you get started and shared one called “Insight Timer” that I found very useful.
If you’re looking for mental clarity, a chance to declutter, relax the mind, body and soul, then try this mindful workout. Remember, patience is key.
