Aside from the stress and anxiety that we may be feeling which could be a reason for not getting enough sleep, there are several other factors that could come into play as well. First, let’s look at diet. Are we eating too many refined carbs? Are we eating too late in the evening?

According to various studies done, when taking in large amounts of high-glycemic refined carbohydrates like white pasta and sugar, that can cause insomnia. When blood sugar is raised by eating these processed foods, there’s an insulin-induced drop in blood sugar afterwards which can lead to the release of cortisol, a stress hormone. This can interfere with our sleep.

Eating more whole grains, fiber, whole fruit and vegetables help lower issues with insomnia. It’s also important to note that if we eat too late (after 8 p.m.) that doesn’t give our body enough time to digest before going to bed which could also cause insomnia.

Here are some tips for getting a good night’s sleep:

1) Eat a healthy diet

2) Try not to eat past 7 or 7:30 p.m.

3) Try to maintain a regular workout regimen

4) Meditate. There are some great apps such as Calm and Insight Timer
