When setting goals for the new year they should be SMART:

Specific-specific goals can consistently enhance performance.

Measurable-or specific goals provides feedback relating to progress in meeting ones goals.

Achievable or Attainable-goals should be challenging and difficult yet attainable.

Realistic-goals that are too difficult or unrealistic can result in failure.

Time Based-one should set short term and long term goals. A combination of the two creates enhanced performance and productivity.

I tend to shy away from the word “resolution.” More often than not, the word puts unnecessary pressure on us. When we set resolutions we feel that we have to stick to them and most are broken within a few days or weeks. When we set goals, I feel it is a more realistic way to create a plan and stick to it knowing that if we make a mistake along the way, it’s not too late to correct it.
